Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trustmore than a sanctuary

Located in northern Zambia, we are one of the world’s oldest and largest chimpanzee sanctuaries. All goes back to 1983, when a game ranger brought a severely wounded baby chimp, saved from poachers, to the cattle ranch of Sheila and David Siddle. The Siddles raised and nursed the chimp – named Pal - back to health, and word quickly spread. Soon, they were inundated with orphaned chimpanzees. Although many were confiscated from poachers, an equally large number were rescued from dilapidated zoos and circuses from all over the world.

Today, Chimfunshi takes care and provides a safe haven for over 150 rescued chimpanzees. Our enclosures spanning 200 hectares on the 10.000 ha of pristine Miombo forest, grant our rescued chimpanzees with the protected and social environment they deserve. Rescued from horrendous conditions and deeply traumatized, these chimpanzees find relief at Chimfunshi, embracing a life of freedom and utmost care.

Chimfunshi's mission goes far beyond shelter; we embrace chimpanzees of all ages and origins, providing life-long nurturing care. For these remarkable species, Chimfunshi serves as a sanctuary and a symbol of hope.

Meet our latest rescues

FIDELOUAIMEE LOVE and VICKY’s story

In May 2023, we received 3 chimpanzees from the Central African Republic rescued from the illegal pet trade. Fidelou, a 6-year-old male, Aimee Love, a 5-year-old female, and Vicky, an 11-year-old female. The three of them experienced years of suffering as a by-product of the illegal bushmeat trade.

They have currently completed their quarantine period; they are healthy and cleared to meet their forever chimpanzee family and we couldn't be more excited for them to start their new life.

They endured so much suffering in the past
but, with your help, we can give them a future.

Meet our Keepers, without them, nothing would be possible
