Welcome to Giving Day for Apes 2021! We are fundraising to continue building our sanctuary for orphaned chimpanzees in Cote d'Ivoire, the only wildife sanctuary in Cote d'Ivoire. We provide critical care to orphaned primates, including chimpanzees, Sooty Mangabeys, Monas, Patas and Putty-Nosed Monkeys. One of these chimpanzee in need is named Djodjo who was rescued from a trafficker 9 months ago. He spent three days in a dark wooden box, with no food or water. He arrived completely non-responsive to our care to the point where we feared he would let himself die.
AKATIA was founded in 2017 by Sarah Crawford and Estelle Raballand. They were motivated to act after the death of Nemley Junior, a baby chimp who was confiscated by Interpol but died after being placed in conditions unsuitable for an orphaned chimp.
The Akatia team has grown a lot this past year and now includes Dominique Liberce, Alain Branger, Claire Saramitto and Sophie Moittie.
As more and more endangered species are trafficked through Cote d'Ivoire, it is imperative that protective measures are improved and that an appropriate rehabilitation center is established for chimps victims of the illegal pet and bushmeat trades.
AKATIA was created to improve the welfare of all primates and specifically chimpanzees in Cote d'Ivoire.
Please join us in our fight to save the remaining chimpanzees of Cote d'Ivoire.
