Project Chimps

Patrick's Group Gets New Digs

For the last few years, we have focused on remodeling the original gorilla structures to accommodate chimpanzees. Just like a remodel of your own home, first you tackle the foundational structures, then you might relocate a wall, upgrade the fixtures, move the furniture around - move the furniture again - and then finally turn to interior decorating. It was time do that in our chimp homes too! Chimpanzees see all the colors that you see and we invited three mural artists to spruce up their space in the Cedar Tree Villa.

What your gift means for the chimps

Now, more than ever, we are reminded of how far we have come in just six years, with your help, to provide lifelong exemplary care to chimpanzees retired from medical research, and for us to continue our strategic plan to build more structures to bring more chimps from the research lab.

Project Chimps is a 236-acre sanctuary that provides lifelong exemplary care to chimpanzees retired from research. Our sanctuary is located in the beautiful forests of the Blue Ridge Mountains and, today, 78 chimpanzees have a forever home at Project Chimps. But our work is far from done. We are focused on bringing nearly 130 more former research chimps from the lab as quickly as we can build the facilities for them.

At Project Chimps, we strive to provide them with an enriching physical and social environment as well as the opportunity to make choices about how they spend their days, which builds confidence and keeps them engaged.

Your support helps us provide these individuals with nutritious foods, state-of-the-art veterinary care, enrichment items, and other programs designed to support social companionship necessary for them to live healthy and fulfilling lives.
