Giving Day for Apes 2021: Loma Chimp Survival Project (LCSP)
Urgent support to continue protecting Sierra Leone’s Loma Mountains National Park (LMNP) and the highest density of chimpanzees in West Africa.
In 2019, TCS established a partnership with the National Protected Area Authority (NPAA) to revive LMNP’s conservation efforts and establish a community-based conservation model to protect the critically endangered chimpanzees and other threatened wildlife. That same year, the TCS outreach team conducted a chimpanzee survey in LMNP, which confirmed that LMNP represents the highest concentration of chimpanzees anywhere in West Africa.
TCS is active in 3 of Sierra Leone’s 4 National Parks and several non-protected sites trying to address the wider underlying problems that are driving the chimps to extinction: deforestation, the illegal trade in wildlife and hunting for bush meat.
Given the urgency of the matter, we have decided to dedicate this year’s Giving Day for Apes campaign to raise funds to continue protecting LMNP’s critical chimp population and safeguarding the Park’s rich biodiversity.
How you can contribute to LCSP during this year’s Giving Day for Apes campaign
Chimps belong in the wild and we all have a responsibility to prevent our closest animal relatives from extinction. Earlier this year, TCS launched a 5-year plan for LMNP. Some of our key initiatives for 2021 are to:
- Strengthen law enforcement by increasing the number of community eco-guards from 21 to 28 (thus establishing patrols in previously unmanned areas);
- Provide alternative livelihood support to 28 communities around LMNP;
- Conduct further research (for example, camera trapping to identify medium and large mammals present in the area) to gather additional baseline data and fully assess LMNP’s rich biodiversity.
- Implement TCS’ environmental education program in 14 schools across communities around Loma
Your support can help us deliver a greater impact
Choose the best support option for you:
- $5 to plant 5 trees in Loma National Park
- $10 for 2 environmental education books for school kids
- $25 for boots, raincoats and backpacks for the Eco-guards
- $100 for camera traps to monitor and identify wild chimps
- $250 for data collection equipment to keep track of the groups of wild chimps
- $600 can pay the annual salary of one TCS eco-guard
And last but not least you can become a Chimpanzee Guardian! For $60 you can become a guardian for one of our ambassador chimps.
You can be a guardian of the youngest (Celia: 1,8 years old) or the oldest of our chimps (Tom, 45 years old!!), or anyone in-between. You can find them on www.tacugama.com/adopt. You will get a monthly update by email, with photos and/or videos.
